The Park Our Town Built / El parque que nuestro pueblo construy?

Diane Gonzales Bertrand (author), Tanja Bauerle (illustrator)

Publisher: Raven Tree Press ISBN: 9781621671039

This is the bilingual version of The Park Our Town Built, a Moonbeem Bronze Medal Award Winner! There is also a vocabulary page at the end of the book. The mayor wants a community park and safe playground for the children. She enlists a group of kids to join her in asking one of the citizens to donate some of his land. When he agrees, he joins all the families and friends who set out to build swings, benches, gardens, and a fountain. There is excitement and a sense of purpose to build the park for all to enjoy. The whole town comes together to create a beautiful park and celebrate with a grand picnic and beautiful fireworks when the job is done. The narrative text builds line by line and page by page, using repetition and imagery to create a charming story for young readers. Vocabulary recognition and matching pictures to the text help readers gain confidence in both comprehension skills and predicting a sequence of events. The words in red are changed to Spanish on subsequent pages to help learn new words in Spanish. A word list is included at the end of the reader. The artwork in this book is superb. Definitely worth noting is the bird in the birdbath doing the backstroke! Also, there are birds in every spread that add to the experience. The first page has one and then every spread thereafter adds a bird! Try to find them all on each spread! Also, try and find the worm in every image. Lastly, the end sheets can be used for visual searches. Find the items in the book! A great, fun book!

A Walk With Grandpa / Un paseo con abulo

Sharon K. Solomon (author), Pamela Barcita (illustrator)

Publisher: Raven Tree Press ISBN: 9781621671206

This is the bilingual version (English and Spanish of A Walk With Grandpa, a Mom's Choice Awards® Gold Recipient. There is also a vocabulary page at the end of the book. A simple walk in the woods becomes so much more. As Daniela and her grandfather stroll through a peaceful woodland setting, they enjoy the beautiful day and each other's company. By playing a word game as they walk, they begin to express just how much they mean to each other. The sentiment and love expressed in this story will bring back fond memories for adults and inspire children, as well. Children may want to create their own special language and bond with their extended families after listening to or reading about Daniela and her grandpa. The first half of the story is told in opposites, while the second half is told using synonyms.
