Big Universe Short Story Competition
For Common Core Curriculum
April 15 to May 15, 2013

Big Universe is sponsoring a Writing Awards Competition for students in grades K-6, with a focus on the new Common Core curriculum. It's time to get excited about writing!

Getting Started

Students may submit short story entries on the topic of their choice. Entries should not exceed 200 words or 32 pages, the typical size of a children's picture book.

Strong entries will include:

  • a beginning, middle, and end
  • a main character who has a problem they need to solve
  • illustrations and graphics using our WRITE section that help your entry come to life

How It Works

  1. Students create a contest entry book using the author tools in the WRITE section of Big Universe.
  2. Entries are then published to the teacher's account for final review.
  3. Teachers submit student work to the Big Universe Writing Awards Competition.
See More Information section below for details.

Contest Requirements

  • Entries will be accepted from Big Universe members only.
  • Entries will be accepted in three age groups: Grades K-1, 2-4, and 5-6.
  • Each book should have no more than 200 words.
  • Limit one entry per student for each competition.
  • Entries must be original, unpublished material and written in English.
  • Entries must be submitted by midnight US Eastern Standard Time on May 15, 2013.
