Adjoa Burrowes
Caterpillars with multi-colored, button down shoes; grandpa sprinkling seasonings in a pot of gumbo; girls telling secrets under a blanket in summer. These are some of the lively images illustrated by children’s book
author and illustrator Adjoa J. Burrowes. Using cut paper collage inspired by Eric Carle and American painter Romare Bearden, Adjoa paints, cuts and assemblies colorful compositions that bring the words of a story alive.
Burrowes began illustrating picture books in 1993 while freelancing for an educational publisher in California. Since then she has illustrated 17 picture books for Lee & Low Books, McGraw Hill, Steck Vaughn, Creative Teaching Press and others. She also illustrates puzzles, posters and
greeting cards.
Grandma’s Purple Flowers (which she both wrote and illustrated) was an American Booksellers Association (ABA) Kids Pick of the List winner; a Bank Street College, Kids Book of the Year Selection; and a first-place Paterson Prize for Books for Young People winner.
Burrowes presents art and writing workshops nationally and belongs to many art and writers groups, including the Washington Children’s Book Guild. She has two large-scale public artworks based on several of her children’s books, on view in downtown Washington DC.
