YEAAAH, BUDDY!
My first glimpses into the wilds of storydom were from the safety of my father’s shadow. In the summers we’d travel “down home” to Kentucky from Michigan, where we had moved so my father could work in the auto factories. There I’d cling to his tall legs and stare wide-eyed as I listened to the hair-raising tales my Appalachian relatives told. We are all big talkers in our family— “yeaaah, buddy!” (which is Kentuckian for “that’s the truth!”)
It was an oral tradition, not bookish. Books were scarce in our house, and therefore highly prized. The library became a second home.
At a young age, I’d gotten my eyes and heart filled with the possibility of story . . . and the knee-slapping, head-bobbing —“ah-huh!”—approval of my elders as I later stood up tall and told my own tales. I was hooked. Now I write picture books, novels, poems, and the occasional magazine piece.
Some of my books have won awards, or appear on prestigious lists. However, the two honors I am especially proud of are the Award of Merit I received from the Michigan Library Association as Children’s Librarian of the Year (2002), and the honor of being one of eight authors invited to the White House for the 2005 Easter Egg Roll— yeaaah, buddy!
