(sung to the tune of “Unwritten,” of course, from Natasha Bedingfield)
I’ve got a great idea for a book, came in a dream.
I’m going to start right on it as soon as I have time.
First though there are dishes that need doing,
and I have to wash the windows
and it’s garbage day. I’ve got to take the cans out to the
Street now, better do a little weeding
and I see the lawn needs mowing.
Mower’s broken, got to fix it.
Feel the sun on my skin.
I decide to take a nap first.
I will put the hammock up.
Think I’ll read in the sun.
And maybe stare at the clouds.
Drench myself in this great weather.
What is that? My cell phone’s ringing.
I forgot. I will be right there.
My book is still unwritten.
Oh, oh, oh,
Today I’ll do it, butt in the chair, I stare at the screen.
But I remember our garbage cans, they’re still out on the street.
Just as I begin to bring them in
I see my neighbor Bernie,
And he shows me his azaleas, I admit that they are pretty.
He digs up a couple of them.
Hands them to me and says, “Have these.
Just plant them in your garden.”
They’ll look good by the ferns.
Or else maybe by the roses.
And I plant them right away.
No not here, maybe there.
Then I go in to wash up.
Make some lunch while watching TV.
Get hooked on the Shopping network.
And I buy seven crystal moose.
Have to answer the phone.
It’s my sister in Kentucky.
She just wants to catch me up.
For three hours, almost four.
The next day sit down to write.
Then remember I have errands.
Look! Yard sales! Got to stop.
Takes all day but I make a haul.
My book is still unwritten.
Next day I decide the cat needs bathing.
And Ive got to feed the goldfish.
Then remember, kitty ate them, I go buy some new fish.
Then I go jogging in the foothills.
I trip and sprain my ankle.
I hobble down the street.
Feel the pain in my foot.
Make a visit to the doctor.
Have to wait an hour or two.
Reading Time, and Newsweek.
The doctor says get some rest.
Let yourself lie on the sofa.
Watch some mindless TV shows.
For a week, maybe two.
So I do. It is great.
But I’m now behind on errands.
And on phone calls and e-mail.
And the yard, and the house.
And wow! This YouTube’s a blast!
Look, another silly kitten.
What a funny movie trailer.
Think Ill write some parodies.
My book is still unwritten.
My book is still unwritten.
My book is still unwritten.
